چکیده

Periodic patterns and symmetries are striking visual properties that have been used decoratively around the world throughout human history. Periodic patterns can be mathematically classi ed into one of 17 differentWallpaper groups, and while computational models have been developed which can extract an image's symmetry group, very little work has been done on how humans perceive these patterns. This study presents the results from a grouping experiment using stimuli from the different wallpaper groups. We nd that while different images from the same wallpaper group are perceived as similar to one another, not all groups have the same degree of self-similarity. The similarity relationships between wallpaper groups appear to be dominated by rotations.

Plane Symmetry Groups

This paper discusses plane symmetry groups, also known as planar crystallographic groups or wallpaper groups. The seventeen unique plane symmetry groups describe the symmetries found in two-dimensional patterns such as those found on weaving patterns, the work of the artist M.C. Escher, and of course wallpaper. We shall discuss the fundamental components and properties of plane symmetry groups.

A Diffusion Equation with Exponential Nonlinearity Recant Developments

The purpose of this paper is to analyze in detail a special nonlinear partial differential equation (nPDE) of the second order which is important in physical, chemical and technical applications. The present nPDE describes nonlinear diffusion and is of interest in several parts of physics, chemistry and engineering problems alike. Since nature is not linear intrinsically the nonlinear case is t...

TEXTBOOK UniT OBJECTiVEs Symmetry, in a mathematical sense, is a transformation that leaves an object • invariant. Some symmetries are understood as geometric motions. • Some symmetries are understood as algebraic operations. • When symmetries are combined, another symmetry is the result. • Symmetries form what is known as a group, which allows mathematicians to • perform a sort of " arithmetic...

Symmetries of Projected Wallpaper Patterns

In this paper we study periodic functions of one and two variables that are invariant under a subgroup of the Euclidean group. Starting with a function defined on the plane we obtain a function of one variable by two methods: we project the values of the function on a strip into its edge, by integrating along the width; and we restrict the function to a line. If the functions had been obtained ...

Patterns with Symmetries of the Wallpaper Group on the Hyperbolic Space

Equivariant function with respect to symmetries of the wallpaper group is constructed by trigonometric functions. A proper transformation is established between Euclidean plane and hyperbolic spaces. With the resulting function and transformation, wallpaper patterns on the Poincaré and Klein models are generated by means of dynamic systems. This method can be utilized to produce infinity of bea...
